Tube Rings
Lowers microphony and distortion
|

From one of our customers:
Then I tried the rings for the ECC82s in the power amp. This was ASTOUNDING!!
The bass immediately became more tuneful and everything became much better integrated. In simple terms, it all became more real....
.....Now I want to order some more rings, please.

Duende Criatura Tube Rings reduce microphony, distortion and feedback from audio tubes. The ring damps the vibrations passed on to the tube from its environment, for example from loudspeakers or vibrating power transformers.

This leads to better separation of instruments, more controlled bass and and increased spatial information.

The rings are mounted towards the top of the tubes. The rings dissipates heat and does not impair the cooling of the tube.

The exact best location of the ring should be determined by ear as it can vary from amplifier to amplifier. The most common position is at the same height as the uppermost mica spacer in the valve.

The white part of the ring is made from teflon and can withstand temperatures of up to 260¼ C. Tubes usually work at temperatures of 160+220¼C so the life span of the ring is unaffected by the heat of the tube, this is not the case with rings of rubber or other materials that are nor heat proof.

The spring is made from titanium, which is non+magnetic. This to avoid problems caused by magnetic fields that can appear in for example steel, and which affects the tube negatively. The titanium ring holds the teflon in place without imposing any eddy currents.

The development of these rings have been ongoing since the beginning of the 1990ies and no ageing effects have been seen.

The largest positive effect is in amplifying stages with low feedback and in phase-splitters. In amps with heavy feedback there are also improvements as distortion created by vibration don't need to be compensated to the same degree.

The rings are cut from teflon and are manufactured in different sizes suitable for the most common types of tubes. They can also be custom-made in other sizes - please indicate the diameter of the upper part of the tube.

The rings are cleaned with ultrasound before delivery, but if you want to clean them after using them for some time just use water and ordinary household detergent.

Handles 260°C without problem.

The best tube damper I have been able to find

Roy Gregory, editor and publisher of the UK hifi magazine hifi+ (strongly recommended) tested the tube rings in issue 28 (Dec 2003). This is his conclusion:

Anybody with a tubeamp, especially an open chassis model should investigate these plain looking little rings immediatly....

...They're now considered essential as far as I am concerned, and bring new meaning to the term ‘Simply The Best’."

Normally the rings are sold in packages of two. However the prices above is for one ring only. This is because of the need to sometimes buy just one ring (ie preamps just having one tube i a special size). In that case we can accept to split a package and deliver single rings as well.

Other dimensions are available made to order.
The price is the same as for the "next larger" size of the stocked rings!
In particular 300B is manufactured in so many different shapes and sizes that it always is a good idea to check the diameter of your tubes in order to get the right size!
