What you see is a magnetometer. It is used to measure magnetism in different objects.

Most people know that magnetism in heads or the capstan of a tape recorder destroys the tapes permanently. The damage made increases with the strength of the magnetism.

Unfortunately this damage cannot be repaired. A tape stores information in magnetic form. A magnet will affect this information - the eraser head in a tape recorder erases the recording by magnetising the tape and the new information is stored by rearranging the magnetism via the recording head.

If an audiotape passes close to a magnetic object the stored information will change. The damage first shows up in the treble, which gradually disappears for each time the tape is played on a machine that has magnetised metal parts close to the tape transport.

This has af course been know "for ever", but it has been difficult to measure the magnetism that exists in heads, capstan and guide pins. Before you can measure this phenomenon you are stumbling in the dark, not knowing whether you are "suffering" from magnetism or nor. And above all, you don´t know if it is of a dangerous quantity!

The worst thing is probably that you even don’t know if a recently performed demagnetisation has been successful or not! And IF it went wrong you are probably in a worse situation than before you began!

You need a magnetometer to know - ie an instrument that measures magnetism!

I have never seen a magnetometer in catalogues or shops selling things for audiophiles; so it is an extra pleasure to be able to offer a precision magnetometer from one of the world’s largest experts on magnetism - R.B. Annis Company in the USA.

This company has delivered magnetic equipment to all the world’s big companies for more than 60 years. Their customer list is very long and impressive.

| Defluxer or demagnetiser (demagnetizer) |
In order to demagnetise (or demagnetize - see note below) all parts of a tape recorder that are close to the tape you need a defluxer. It is also called a demagnetiser.

You should be aware that certain parts of a tape recorder could be very difficult to demagnetise. You can read more about this in an article from R.B. Annis which can be downloaded here as a PDF file (ca 90Kb).

They have measured different hand held defluxers and found that most of them only can produce 70-80 oersteds, or in some cases 100. This is too little to guarantee complete demagnetisation. And also, if you don´t have a magnetometer you have no way of knowing if you have succeeded or not!

R.B. Annis defluxer produces 350 - 400 oersted at the tip of the angled probe and 800 (!) at the opposite end, which also can be used for demagnetisation. That is enough to demagnetise a whole tape if desired!
For maximun demagnetising efficiency, the Han-D-Mag is rated for practical intermittent duty. It may be left connected to power for six to eight minutes at a time without overheating. If, by accident, you should forget to disconnect this powerful demagnetiser, an internal calibrated thermal protector will permanently open the circuit, thus eliminating a fire hazard. Such "forgotten" units can be repaired at a modest cost.

If you have a tape recorder (including cassette decks) and tapes; these are two accessories that you must own in order not to destroy your tapes when you play them. For once the word "must" is used correctly!

You see, there is NO other way to avoid magnetic build-up in the metal parts of your tape machine!

It is therefore only a question of time before you have destroyed your valuable tapes, and once that happened there is NO way to restore them!

Recording studios demagnetise every day!!!

Do you have a defluxer?

Are you sure you really have demagnetised your tape machine?

  Precision magnetometer
handmade instrument with a ruby bearing and a detachable probe to facilitate readings in tight spots

Measuring a large recording head.
As you can see the meter is just held close to the object to be measured. It couldn’t be simpler!

The probe can be bent to reach tight spots.

Hand-D-Mag is a big lump that has enough power to demagnetise difficult material and details.

Demagnetising a capstan.

 Note: In amerikan english
the demagnetiser is usually called a demagnetizer.
In the same way demagnetise is the same as demagnetize.
In the text above you can equally well use the words demagnetizer and demagnetize
instead of demagnetise and demagnetiser.
