One deck = stereo unbalanced signal (most common)
Two decks for balanced signal in stereo
You can connect up to 6 different sources with this switch. There is an adjustable mechanical stop so you can set it for 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 positions - depending on your needs.
A very high quality selector switch with a thicker than usual layer of gold in order to withstand many years of continous audio use without oxidation.
The normal switch in the ELMA 04-series has 10µm silver with a protective layer of roughly 0.2µm gold.
This is intended as a protection during storage and transport only and does not withstand continous use without being worn off.
That turns the contact surface into silver which is unsuitable for audio as it is extremely prone to oxidation, something that can immediatly be heard in the form of crackle and pops.

The classic ELMA 04 selector, used exclusively until the new, softer Audio selectors appeared.
With 24 positions and 3µm gold, just as it should be.
Using this as the base you can build all attenuators including transformer attenuators.
Normally I recommend the newer switches below though, because opf their softness and "low bounce".

An audio selector switch specially developed for use
as a volume control/attenuator
With 24 positions and extra smoth running
Each position has two solder patches
which makes it simple to build a series type attenuator.
This is the switch closest to the classic above.

An audio selector switch specially developed
as a base for a shunt type volume control/attenuator
With 24 positions and extra smoth running
One deck per channel has double solder patches
while the other features a separate groundplane,
making it simple to build a shunt type attenuator.
